When I first got licensed as a pharmacist in the US, I was eager to step into my new role. But my director (who I had worked with for about a year as a pharmacy technician) told me that there was no position available for me. I later discovered the truth, it wasn’t a matter of lack of vacancy: I was a recent immigrant with a strong accent, my ability to serve as a pharmacist was questioned.
That moment cut deep. I began to second-guess myself and wonder if perhaps I wasn’t capable after all, despite two years of prior work experience as a foreign registered pharmacist. But God, in His kindness, placed a seasoned pharmacist in my path, a gentleman who would share his shifts with me and patiently watch over my work. Under his guidance, I slowly regained my confidence and within a few months, I stepped into a position with one of the largest employers in our metropolitan area. From that moment forward, I never looked back.
Along the way, I learned some powerful lessons about rebuilding one’s confidence and standing firm in who God made me to be, and you can do the same!
1. Celebrate the small wins.
I still remember the first time I held a shift all by myself, managing the store without needing my mentor’s help. It may have seemed like a small thing, but to me, it was a huge victory. Every small step forward was proof that I was regaining my confidence and these little wins added up to big confidence.
2. Receive affirmation and learn to affirm yourself.
That seasoned pharmacist believed in me when I was struggling to believe in myself. His words of encouragement became seeds of strength, and slowly I began to silence the voice of negativity within. I learned to be my own cheerleader, reminding myself daily: I can do this. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
3. Keep learning and growing.
Confidence isn’t built overnight. It comes as we practice, develop, and stretch our skills. The more I invested in learning and doing, the more capable I felt and the more brightly I burned with passion for my profession all over again.
4. Surround yourself with those who believe in you.
The company you keep matters deeply. Being around people who see your potential, who nurture your gifts, and who encourage your growth is a beautiful blessing. When others demonstrate their belief in you, it becomes easier to believe in yourself.
5. Take action, even if you’re afraid.
Sometimes your knees will shake, your heart will race, and your voice will tremble. That’s okay. Take the step anyway. Apply for the job, sign up for the course, say “yes” to the challenge. The very act of moving forward, despite fear, will strengthen your confidence.
My story began with rejection, but it blossomed into resilience. If you ever find yourself doubting your capabilities, remember this: confidence grows one step, one choice, one small victory at a time.
Thank you so much for reading and never forget: God loves you and so do I.
